Melrose win back Waverley Cup – Jedforest top Border League Pool at Hawick

Melrose ended 2017 with another win, this time re-claiming the Waverley Cup for the first time in three years from Gala at The Greenyards.  They ran in 7 tries to 2 in a 43-18 victory which saw Grant Runciman and Ross McCann both getting a brace of tries, with Craig Jackson, Richard Ferguson and Lewis Mallin contributing one each. It was 12-6 at the break in what was a fairly disjointed affair, both teams opting for up-and-unders on a number of occasions, but the second half saw the game spring to life and although the Maroons were never really in the game in the second period their heads never went down and their two tries from Alan Emond and Simon Fairburn were well-taken efforts.

Over at Mansfield Park, Jedforest pipped Hawick 10-8 to secure their place in the Booker Border League Final where they will  play Melrose or Kelso next year at Milntown. The game was also a double header with the Skelly Cup being awarded to the winner of this annual festive fixture. At Scremerston Berwick lost 0-24 to Alnwick in their Bill Renton Claret Jug game.
