The South of Scotland rugby team will take to the field outwith the Borders for the first time this century in a match against Caledonia (Caley Reds) at Bridgehaugh, the home of Stirling County RFC on Tuesday 7th November at 7.30pm. It will be only the fourth time since 2000 that a full South XV made up of club players from the Scottish Borders (or originate from a Borders club) will wear the famous red and white hooped jerseys.
Proceeds from the game will be going to Doddie Weir’s Discretionary Trust after Doddie’s diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
Last year in the corresponding fixture at Riverside Park, Jedburgh, The South won 33-7, and marked the third victory for The South since the team returned to playing games following victories over Northumberland in 2009 and The Barbarians in 2011.
The squad will be captained again by Gala fly half and Scottish 7s international Gregor Hunter with Hawick’s Bruce McNeil vice captain. The 25 players in the squad come from Hawick (9), Jedforest (7), Gala (5), Selkirk (3) and Kelso (1). Melrose were invited to support this match but declined to do so.
The team will be announced on Tuesday 31st October.
Captain Gregor Hunter said:
“I’m obviously really honoured to be named South Captain again. I really enjoyed the challenge last year and I’m glad I have the opportunity to not only represent the south but be captain again. It was a tough challenge last year but it will be even harder being away from home. Hopefully we can get a good travelling support and put in a performance.”
Head Coach for this game will be Kevin Barrie (Jedforest).
