Borders teams progress to next round of Cups

On the weekend that Scotland put in a very good performance against New Zealand despite losing 17-22, some of the Borders clubs took part in the BT Cup and BT National Cup competitions, with Melrose and Hawick progressing to the quarter final stages of the BT Cup. Two local derbies meant that we would lose at least two Borders sides but equally we were guaranteed to see two others progress. Jedforest had been unbeaten at home this season in National 1 but they were facing unbeaten Melrose from the very top of the BT Premiership. Jedforest put in a marvellous effort, losing the try count 4-3, but in the end lost 35-17. Watch highlights here.  Hawick and Selkirk did battle at Mansfield Park with the lead changing hands several times. In the end the Greens posted their first competitive win of the season by 38-29.  Gala crashed out at Meggetland with a crushing 67-3 defeat to Boroughmuir.

In the BT National Cup, made up from the bottom six in National 1 along with the whole of National 2 and 3 clubs, Peebles, St Boswells and Kelso all made it through to the quarter finals. Peebles beat Haddington 31-15, St Boswells won away from home 27-10 at Hillhead-Jordanhill, while Kelso eventually got to grips with Howe of Fife, comfortably taking the tie 59-17.

In the East Leagues there were wins for Berwick and Hawick Harlequins on the road in EL1, while in the second division all four Borders teams who had a game won their matches. Langholm, Earlston, Gala YM and Hawick Linden claimed victories.
