In dreadful wet conditions Gala edged past Melrose at the Greenyards to recapture the Waverley Cup with a 17-10 win in front of a very healthy crowd which totally packed the main stand, with many souls braving the elements on the far banking. Melrose got off to a fine start with a Neil Irvine-Hess try converted by Joe Helps on three minutes. David O’Hagan kicked Gala ahead at the break with three penalty goals before Jason Baggot slotted a clever drop goal for Melrose to regain the lead by a point. O’Hagan thumped over a fourth penalty from long range to put the Maroons back in the driving seat, before a Euan Dods try wrapped the game up as the match finished in near darkness despite a 2pm kick off. Former Gala player Roddy Grant announced his retirement from rugby following a series of injuries. The flanker, who has played for Scotland A, Scotland 7s, Border Reivers and Edinburgh, never quite managed a full cap, and remains one of the unluckiest players never to get a cap; many would argue this was a huge injustice for a man who has been one of the most exciting players in Scottish Rugby.
