The Scottish Rugby fixture list was once again decimated as snow swept in and wiped out most of the games, but two matches in the Borders survived the weather, including the BT Cup Round 2 tie between Gala and Glasgow Hawks. The Maroons faced a fierce gale in the first period but contained the visitors to just a 6-3 lead, with a David O’Hagan penalty for the home side. But despite the wind advantage in the second half and a period of 10 minutes playing against 14 men after a yellow card incident, Gala couldn’t capitalise and conceded two tries to lose the game 18-3 and exit the competition.
In National League 1 a superb Andrew Skeen try set up a 16-10 victory against Aberdeen Grammar – a result which gives third-bottom Kelso valuable four points, although Aberdeen returned to the frozen north with a losing bonus point. The only other game involving a Borders side was in East League 1 where Hawick Quins lost at Dunbar. Watch highlights of Gala v Glasgow Hawks and Kelso v Aberdeen here.
