Winning starts for five top-ranked Borders teams as new season gets underway

Melrose scored an impressive eight tries against Watsonians at The Greenyards to win their first BT Premiership game of the season. The 54-22 win puts them immediately at the top of the table ahead of another home fixture next weekend when they face Boroughmuir. Fraser Thomson (pictured) scored a hat trick to take his total of tries in a Melrose jersey to 100, a phenomenal achievement. Sam Pecqueur, Russell Anderson, Grant Runciman, Ross McCann and Ally Miller scored the others.  Over at Mansfield Park the scoreboard told its own story, with Hawick losing heavily at home to Currie 28-39, and despite getting a try bonus point this was a big disappointment for their start to the season. Darcy Graham once again showed his class in touching down for a superb try out wide, with Kyle Brunton, a Penalty Try and a touchdown by Ross Combe adding to their tally.
